May 2001 Roll Call

No.1 Pauline Mowbray

I am part of the Eastbourne Boniface's and my cousin's who I know who are on
BIG are Michael Bignell in Canada, And Louise Genge in Australia with me. I
am sorry if I have missed anyone if you would like to remind us you have
connections with the Eastbourne Boniface's that would be great?

The furthest back with proof of Church Records, Wills, Certificates & Census
records we have got is with the following family who are my direct line back
to me? We have other possibilities but until confirmed I do not add.

Thomas Boniface born abt 1755 Eastbourne, married 1779 Eastbourne, Elizabeth
Rich born abt 1759 Eastbourne, 11 known children, her parents Richard Rich &
Elizabeth Waymarke.

George Boniface born 1779 Eastbourne, married 1802 Eastbourne, Lucy Verrall
born 1778 Eastbourne, 11 known children although on her memorial card in
1869 it states 14 children, 89 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, (I did
here a story that she took in 3 children?) Lucy's parents were Thomas
Verrall and Sarah Collins.

Edward Boniface born 1813 Eastbourne, married 1833 Eastbourne, another Lucy
Verrall born 1818 Eastbourne, 11 known children, Lucy's parents were William
Verrall & Elizabeth Earle.

George Boniface born 1836 Eastbourne, married 1858 Folkington, Sx, Sarah
Jane Hilton born 1833 West Firle, Sx, 8 known children, Sarah's parents
Henry Hilton & Ann Stephens.

Harriet Lucy Boniface born 1864 Eastbourne, married 1833 Eastbourne, Jesse
Fry born abt 1861 Frant, Kent 5 known children, Jesse's parents Jesse Fry
Hannah? Second wife Mary Wells 16 known children between the 2 wives,
Jesse's Parents James Fry & Bathsheba Upton, John's parents John Fry &?
Bathsheba's James Upton &? I have looked for over 12 years for the last the
3 Generations so keep looking.

If any has any information and I do think one day there must be a connection
with the Hailsham & Pevensey families? I'm sure we will find one day there
will be some distant cousin we are connected to in the other Boniface's?
BFN Pauline

PS I saved this email in Word from last Roll Call as it is to much to keep
typing out and have just upgraded pieces of it.

No.3 Betty Deforest I am still looking for the same folks as the last roll Call. I have not found anymore pieces to my puzzle for a very long time.. For the newcomers to the list...I have 3 BONIFACE lines because of cousins marrying cousins.. BONIFACE LINES 1st line Father Frederick BONIFACE...1914 Southwater, Horsham Married Irene THOMAS 1935 Grandfather William BONIFACE..1878..Lower Beeding ... married to Bessie COOMBES 1908 Great Grandfather Henry BONIFACE... 1829....Lower Beeding.....married to Philadelphia nee BONIFACE 1870 2nd Great Grandfather William BONIFACE.. abt 1800 (probably Ditchling) married Sarah BOOKER 1824 3rd Great Grandfather John BONIFACE..abt 1753 birth place unknown married to Mary SNDEN 1785 2nd line Father Frederick BONIFACE 1914 Southwater, Horsham Married Irene THOMAS 1935 Grandfather William BONIFACE..1878..Lower Beeding ... married to Bessie COOMBES 1908 Great Grandmother Philadelphia BONIFACE 1847 Lower Beeding married Henry BONIFACE 1870 2nd Great grandfather.George BONIFACE 1818....Lower Beeding married to Phoebe Ann Louisa nee BONIFACE 1839 3rd Great grandfather George abt 1794 Ditchling married Philadelphia DINNAGE 1817 4th Great grandfather John abt 1753 birth place unknown married to Mary SINDEN 1785 3rd line Father Frederick BONIFACE 1914 Southwater, Horsham Married Irene THOMAS 1935 Grandfather William BONIFACE..1878..Lower Beeding ... married to Bessie COOMBES 1908 Great Grandmother Philadelphia BONIFACE 1847 Lower Beeding married Henry BONIFACE 1870 2nd Great Grandmother Phoebe Ann Louisa BONIFACE Ditchling married George BONIFACE 1839 3rd Great Grandfather John BONIFACE 1788 Laughton married to Sarah TAYLOR 1811 4th Great Grandfather John abt 1753 birth place unknown married to Mary SINDEN 1785
No.4 Jeff & Marilyn Young My line & interests are: F: Ewen Richard PARSONS GF: George Richard PARSONS born 1883 Masterton, NZ, died 1983 Te Awamutu NZ GGF: George Henry BONIFACE born 1838 Nuthurst, Sussex, died 1908 Makotuku, NZ. (NOTE: He used PARSONS as his surname from 1873, therefore all his descendants from then have the PARSONS surname but should be BONIFACE) 2xGr Grandfather: James BONIFACE born 1813 Nuthurst, Sussex, died 1838 Nuthurst, Sussex 3xGr Grandfather: Thomas BONIFACE born 1782 I am connected to both Beth Hughes and Mary Norman. I would like to find the birth/christening entry for Catherine BONIFACE born around 1834-38. She possibly was born & christened before the marriage of her parents James BONIFACE born 1813 Nuthurst, Sussex and Catherine GILLICE at Nuthurst on 27 June 1836, therefore she could been christened with her mother's surname GILLICE. I am also researching the GILLICE surname.
No.5 Janet (Boniface) Glass The following is my line as far as I have been able to research it. I am most interested in more information about my 2X grandfather James Boniface, also were there other siblings in his family besides his son James? 2X Grandfather: James BONIFACE 1X Grandfather: James BONIFACE b1853 Hove, Sussex. m. Louisa King, October 20. 1877. Grandfather: James BONIFACE, b. March 2, 1885, Portslade, Sussex. m. Louisa Rose Potts, Feb. 19, 1908, St. Barnabas Church, Hove, Sussex. Father: James Frederick Henry BONIFACE, b. Nov. 22, 1912, Galt, Ont. Canada, m. Gladys Rose Estelle Wilson. June 17, 1939. Any information would be most appreciated.

No.7 Lynda Pay I`ve only just begun So please excuse any lack of info. My links are through My fathers Line. Father - Henry Frank JACKSON b Brighton 1911 GM - Elizabeth Mildred BONIFACE b Bton 1885 + Henry James JACKSON 1G-GF- David BONIFACE b Bton 1856 + Amelia Letitia KNIGHT 2G-GF- James BONIFACE b Twineham 1811 + Elizabeth BONIFACE 1814 Then as Steve Everitt Just to say its been a lovely day here for the start of our Brighton Festival, the first one as a City. The Town Centre, and seafront area are very busy ,also our "Seagulls" (Brighton & Hove Albion) have just won the 3rd Division title and are promoted to the 2nd Division! The Whole Place has that super buzzy feel that is really Brighton
No.8 Carole Bonifas As previously this is my BONIFAS line - have added in the wives: Grandfather - Leroy William Dutton BONIFAS (b. Wimbledon 1899-d. London 1974) m. Minnie Martha Elizabeth SMITH (b. London 1902, d. London 1992); Ggrandfather - Alfred Leroy William Dutton BONIFAS (b. London 1878-d c1960)m. Ellen Gertrude COSTER (b 1878, d. c. 1961) GGgrandfather - William Dutton BONIFAS (b. Chard, Somerset 1839-d Putney 1896) m. Elizabeth Ann WEBB b. Rotherhithe c. 1840 GGGgrandfather - Dutton BONIFAS (b. Dorchester Dorset 1782-d. Chard, Somerset 1849) m. 1. Charity BURRIDGE (b. c. 1783, d. Dorchester 1807); 2. Sarah MABER (b. Bath c1785, d. Chard 1832); 3. Louisa Maria GOUGH (b. Topsham 1803, d. Langport 1870) GGGGgrandfather John (Jean) BONIFAS (mar. London1765 to Jane DUTTON, d. Dorchester c. 1815) GGGGgrandfather Francois BONIFAS (alive in London 1766, possibly born Haut Languedoc, France, possibly married to Louise BERTRAND) Francois was a Huguenot, most likely a refugee from the Haut Languedoc region of France where the BONIFAS clan was, and is, numerous. I'm still looking for the actual link to 18th century France which is probably my 'most wanted'. In the UK today the only BONIFAS's I know of are all descended from my ggrandfather, Alfred. Only recent development is contact with a lady in Hawaii whose maiden name is BONIFAS and whose father emigrated from London to the USA in 1921. We are trying to find a common link. Although some of my family are occasionally (mis?)spelt BONIFACE over the years by various clerks etc, the spelling is generally pretty consistently BONIFAS since 1765, thus backing up Hugh's theory that it is a Huguenot name. No links to any BONIFACE family as yet, but you never know!
No.9 Helen Herbert My line is almost the same as Hilary Ferguson's, so I have connections with her, with Derek Parson, with Michele Tsuji and I think with Andy Holter. My thanks to the late Bert Parsons who supplied much of the information below. GGM - Elizabeth born Hailsham,1855-1917, m. Frederick William MOON 2XGF - James 1836 - ? m. Hailsham m Ales AERIDGE 10XGF - John m Tomsyne COLLYAR My main interest now is in any 'anecdotal' information that members may have, in order to put flesh on bones, e.g occupations, cause of death, links with other members etc.. I would also like to find a link with the Eastbourne crowd. Despite all the information gleaned over the past couple of years, (mainly due to the inestimable Steve), we still haven't found a connection.

Still can't believe my luck that I stumbled across the site. My mother is delighted that this info is available and now old photos etc. seem to mean a lot more. If any of you ever come across the book 'Sussex, People, Places and Things' by Bernard Price you'll find mention of some Bonifaces. My Great grandfather Harry Boniface is on the cover looking after his flock at age 12 (1888 and a three generation picture of Harry, Nelson (his son) and John (Harrys father)is shown within the book. That's my boniface claim to fame. Sadly, very few of my line still carry the Boniface name but I suppose thats the way things go. Sorry that I currently add no value to the BIG cause. Hats off to those who do - I am sincerely in your debt!
No.15 Derrick Parsons Here is my Boniface role call. Most of the links are based on information I have received from various BIG members and Bert Parsons. Those links I have been able to verify have proven to be accurate and, because of this, I'm happy to assume the accuracy of those that I have not been able to verify - but I am still working on the verification! GM: May Ellen Boniface (1895, Portsmouth) m (1922) Ernest George Parsons. 1G.GF Caleb (1860, Ditchling) m1 (1883) Jane King (1861); m2 (1919) Harriet Ann Mills. 2G.GF Thomas (1862) m (1856) Harriet Saunders 3G.GF Francis (1793, Pevensey) m. This is my roll call, amassed largely due to a great deal of help from other
BIG members (Thanks). The majority of the family is Hailsham based and I

No.18 Allan Martin
(BIG member 28)
I have two lines both starting at the same place, and of course
ending in the same place (me and my son James).
Starting from my Great Great Grand parents:
George Collins (1825-1875) Bepton married Lucy Holder
Elizabeth Bonney (1798-1848) Midhurst married James Collins
Thomas Bonney (1757-?) Treyford cum Didling married Ann Sowter
Edward Boniface (1730-?) Didling & Trotton married Agnes Allen
Edward Boniface married Elizabeth Elliott
Lucy Holder (1832-1912) Easebourne married George Collins
Lucy Titcom (1795-?) Midhhurst married William Holder
Sarah Boniface (1767-?) Treyford, West Sussex married Henry Titcom
Edward Boniface (1730-?) Didling & Trotton married Agnes Allen
Edward Boniface married Elizabeth Elliott

Now this is where the "perhaps" begins and the tree get's a bit uncertain.
Edward Boniface (1698-?) married Elizabeth Elliott at Wiggonholt
Thomas Boniface (1660 or 1664) married Judith Nightingale at Heyshott
is either the child of John Boniface (1623-?) married Annas Dedman at Easebourne
or his brother Thomas Boniface (1628-?) married Alice Hopkin
John Boniface (1593-?) married Anne Herres in Hurstpierpoint
James Boniface (1570- 1627) married Marie at Woodmancote
We are very grateful for the help received from Hugh Boniface
We have made a web site for the other names that we are researching
and if you are interested in other Sussex names you may find something on there.

No.19 Ken Lanterman
From James Boniface to John Keed Boniface, my great grandfather, all were born
in England. John Keed was born in Oldham, came to NYC with his father in the mid
1800s, and had three wives. I don't know about the other two but his third wife of whom
I am descended, Ruth Hannah Taylor was born in Lancashire. They met while they were
in NYC. They later moved to Morristown, N.J. and had many, many children. I hope one
of their descendents reads this
and can shed some light on the tree or this be of help to
them. Here's the tree down five
generations....Ken Lanterman.

I seem to link into the tree supplied by the late Bert Parsons at this
point, but I haven't yet added it in to my list yet, but that ties me to
Hilary Ferguson and others thru' the Hailsham families.
I'm not very active on this line at present but I keep 'listening' to all
your banter, which helps brighten up the day,but hey the summers here (all 5
days of it!)

No.22 Tony Scott
Please add me to the roll call. Although not an active family tree tracker I do keep a
close eye on whats happening to see if I can be of any help to anyone re. Hailsham,
Eastbourne etc. as that is where I now live.

Weak area in research is William birth and Richards connection
Have now discovered that there are two Richard & Ann's and I have
to separate the original one big family into two. Looking at records to
pin down and verify this area of my tree. Connection to Lynn Pay and
her son Antony Pay through common ancestor James. Antony is
descended from Henry's brother David. Interests of late include
the Boniface's who married each other. I have a John Boniface
who married an Emily Boniface. Emily's father was a James Boniface.
Through this line I connect to Beryl Freemantle.
